Sibling success at youth tournament
Sibling power reigned supreme at a recent chess tournament.
The Christmas Chess Competition took place on Sunday, December 6 and once again the standard of competition was extremely high from our young chess players.
The competition, was held for pupils in Years 3-6 and they played five games each before an overall winner was crowned.
Overall winner went to George Watkins after an impressive display throughout, scoring an unmatched 4.5 points out of a possible five.
There was even more to celebrate in the Watkins household as sister Grace came away from the competition as the girls’ winner, continuing her recent fine form with another triumph.
In the under nines category there were joint winners in the form of brothers Rhys and Harry Buttle, who had nothing to separate them at the end of their five contests – scoring four points each to share first prize.
Mr Camp, said: “It seems that this latest tournament was most definitely a family affair, which was absolutely fantastic to see.
“George ensures me that he can still beat Grace if they did battle on the board, but with all her recent success he might be given a run for his money at the very least."
Our budding chess stars got the chance to experience tournament play for the first time at a recent event.
Mr Camp hosted a tournament for Year 2 pupils on Saturday, November 14 at the Lyndon Library, where players tested their skills in a competitive setting for the first time.
A fantastic turnout of 18 pupils attended the event, and all who took part received a medal and portable chess set for their efforts.
After each pupil had played six games each, a winner for the boys and girls category was crowned, and the titles went to Rafe Tunstall and Fleur Roberts respectively.
Rafe was in particularly good form throughout the competition, ending it unbeaten, while Ffleur fought off some talented opponents to take home the trophy.
Mr Camp, said: “Eighteen kids played six games each with the emphasis on fair and fun competition and learning to concentrate for a decent amount of time.
“All of the pupils showed brilliant composure considering this was their first taste of tournament action, and Rafe was really impressive in securing three checkmates on the way to winning."
