Teacher Julie Woodthorpe reflects on term
At the start of the term we planted some onions in the School Garden ready for an early harvest next year. We used flowers which we had grown in the summer to make cards, by picking the petals and leaves, and drying them between sheets of paper.
The children have also taken part in Energy Month by designing posters and monitoring the lights in the classrooms.
The Eco Committee have organised several projects this term. A textile collection was arranged which recycled 102 kg of clothing. We also cashed in some of our Science into Schools points which we had collected from previous textile collections. We were able to order a solar mechanics set and data loggers for use in Science lessons.
After Half Term, the Year 4 members encouraged everyone to save postage stamps from their mail to donate to WVS (Worldwide Veterinary Service), which will help the charity raise vital funds for their work around the world. Please continue to bring in your stamps next term, especially from all the Christmas post!
Energy Month was held in November and December to raise awareness of climate change. The Eco Committee members prepared their own assembly for the Prep children to highlight this, and to encourage everyone to switch off unnecessary lights.
The ground in the School Garden was cleared by our Maintenance staff in October, ready for our new fence panels, bedding areas and the plastic bottle greenhouse. The wet weather following this has unfortunately delayed further progress, but we hope to continue with our plans soon.
In September, Year 3 wrote individual letters to the Queen to congratulate her on her reign of 63 years. They were delighted to receive a letter back from Buckingham Palace, thanking them for their letters.
