Pupils shine in-and-out of school
Star sailor Zac Roberts celebrated debut success at a sailing event this term.
The nine year-old Year 5 pupil took part in the Welsh CYRC at Shotwick held on Saturday, October 17, which signalled the end of the current campaign.
In his first competitive appearance on the water, Zac managed to claim second place in the General Handicap Fleet, where he was competing against sailors much more experienced.
This eye-catching performance was just one of many successes for the school, who took the top four spots in the General Handicap Fleet, something which bodes well for future success next season.
Also making her first appearance was Ariana Milligan, but unfortunately her day ended early after a cold and wet capsize.
Mr Cashell, added: “It was the first regatta for many of our sailors on the day and they produced a great set of results.
“Some of the sailors were very nervous as it was their first ever event but they all rose to the challenge.
“To fill the top four spots in a competitive General Handicap Fleet was outstanding."
A number of our talented pupils put in strong performances at this year’s North West Independent Schools Cross Country Championships.
The event, held on Thursday, November 20, saw 14 pupils tackle the course and gave a good account of themselves despite the energy sapping conditions.
A heavy downpour had turned the course at Stonyhurst College into a swamp, but that failed to put off our runners, with the boys being led home by James Copeland in 21st place out of 130 athletes who took part, an improvement on 13 spots from the previous year.
Second boy to finish was Osca Clark in 44th, which was an immense improvement on his 11th placed finish last year, while Year 5 pupil Will Tavernor was two places behind in a creditable 46th.
Next across the line came a group of four boys in quick succession – Matthew Stubbins (63rd), John Williams (65th), Zac Roberts (66th) and Josh Stewart (68th) completing the field.
In the Under 11 girls’ race, Year 5 pupil Eleanor Tunstall was the first pupil across the line in 50th position.
Caitriona Searl was one place behind in 51st, Priscilla Fu finished completed the course to finish 56th, with Phillippa Smith-Edwards not far behind in 58th.
Ruby Merrick completed the soggy course in 80th, while Lily Northcott and Ariana Milligan were hot on her heels in 81st and 89th respectively.
