Grand Chamossaire Challenge Kilimanjaro Click Here
The evening of Saturday February 6th saw our winter Grand Chamossaire Challenge take place. This involved running or walking from Villars to the top of the mountain. It was encouraging that so many staff and family members were present to give their support. All of the participating students completed the event in excellent times. Congratulations must go to Othman H, the boys' winner and Sofia U, winner of the girls' race.
However, events such as this do not just celebrate winners. Many students enjoyed their own personal achievements. For example Louis M made it back on time to compete after a local ski race and ran the whole challenge and Anna B completed the event despite being medically dispensed. Louis F-S showed great encouragement for others by running up and down the final hill helping others to finish and Rika Y showed great determination to complete the challenge in an excellent personal time. Amaya R even celebrated her 18th Birthday during the event, certainly a birthday to remember! S. O'Hara
A feat such as climbing Mount Kilimanjaro should not be rushed into, which is why the 30+ students and staff started their ascent slowly. This would increase to 200 metres per hour, but time was given to acclimatise and to offer the best chance at reaching the summit.
In Beau Soleil spirit, students created a great atmosphere and helped each other through the difficult times. It allowed chance to reflect on and be grateful for those behind the scenes who were supporting, including the porters, guides and those who provided a delicious meal each night.
The day of the summit itself began early. At 1.00am it was time to gather head torches and start walking. The body at altitude can be unpredictable, and it is impossible to know how it might respond to the conditions. This unfortunately meant that some had to return despite their best efforts. For the rest, they would reach the summit between 7.30-8.00AM and celebrated at the top before the descent.
The experience ended with the team enjoying a safari and a well-deserved rest. This was a truly amazing experience and epitomised all of the values of Beau Soleil. F. Waes
