Pupils battle at inter-house event
The annual inter-house cross-country event took place on Wednesday, October 19, saw Year 3 to 6 pupils battle it out in separate categories with the aim of claiming the overall prize for either Snowdon, Pembroke or Brecon houses.
The Year 3 race brought with it immediate drama when Lily Copeland took a tumble in what is now known as “Copeland Corner”, having claimed her brother James last year.
She battled well to recover and finished in second position, with Snowdon teammate Charlotte Payne running out a comfortable winner, with Eloise Brown of Pembroke in third.
The boys’ race was a highly competitive affair with Dominic Chamberlain (Snowdon) beating off the challenge of Archie Jeeves (Brecon) and Nathan Richards (Snowdon) to claim the prize.
Pembroke’s Cieran Milligan had his sights set on the course record in the Year 4 boys’ race, but despite cruising to victory the record remains intact – at least for the time being – and he finished 40 seconds ahead of Freddie MacLaverty (Snowdon) and Theo Roberts (Brecon).
The ever-impressive Fflur Pierce came away victorious in the girls’ race, with Kiera Luke (Brecon) and Gracie Tavernor (Pembroke) finishing second and third respectively.
Year 5 brought with it a number of impressive performances, with Pembroke’s Cerys Williams digging deep to finish first, with Ella Northcott (Snowdon) and Jasmin Beckett-Donald rounding off the podium places.
James Gilman was the standout performer in the boys’ race, finishing just ahead of Snowdon compatriot Harry Fardoe, who marked his first ever inter-house appearance at the school with second, while Ethan Akroyd (Pembroke) finished third.
The final race of the afternoon brought with it the fastest time of the day as Pembroke’s Will Tavernor claimed the Year 6 boys’ category in a time of nine minutes, 26 seconds, with Zac Roberts (Snowdon) and Matthew Stubbins (Pembroke) rounding off the top three.
A highly competitive girls’ category saw recent arrival to Lily Davies (Snowdon) led the way ahead of Caitriona Searl (Snowdon) and Kalis Wilson-Lawrie (Pembroke).
Snowdon were crowned overall champions after achieving the most podium finishes, with Pembroke in second and Brecon third, while Eve Durrans picked up this year’s Endurance Award.
