Primary Schools make rockets
A pair of Conwy primary schools have been taking part in a special project inspired by an upcoming world land speed record attempt.
Both Ysgol Pen y Bryn and Ysgol Craig y Don visited Rydal Penrhos’ Design and Technology department to take part in rocket car making workshops, are propelled by a solid fuel rocket and can reach over 50 miles per hour.
Under the guidance of D&T staff at the school, pupils carefully built their rocket cars throughout two separate sessions, before testing them during an afternoon launch phase ahead of the regional round of the Bloodhound Project competition.
The department will be hosting the local finals in March and will feature seven schools from the area, with the top two qualifying for the national finals and a chance to win £1,000 and a VIP trip to South Africa for the team to see Bloodhound SSC attempt to reach 1,000mph to break the record.
Mr Sutton, said: “The Bloodhound Project is a global Engineering Adventure, using a 1,000mph world land speed record attempt to inspire the next generation to enjoy, explore and get involved in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
“During the trip, the groups got to grips with things such as aerodynamics friction and Newton’s Laws in an action packed fun filled STEM activity, and we were delighted to welcome them to Rydal Penrhos.”
