Committee gets award
Our hard working Eco Committee, which is run by Mrs Woodthorpe, have achieved its Bronze Award through the Green Tree Schools scheme, from the Woodland Trust.
The school have taken part in a number of activities which have contributed to the award, including a writing competition last year by Year 3 pupils, and sharing an assembly created by the Trust about ‘The Man Who Planted Trees’.
Committee members and other prep pupils will now begin working hard on gaining their Silver award from the charity, and they hope to receive their first point thanks to Rydal Penrhos’ recent Christmas card recycling scheme.
The Eco Committee have also adopted an orang-utan called Chikita through Orangutan Appeal UK.
They were inspired by a recent visit from local artists and conservation worker Jacha Potgieter, who gave a talk to the Prep children about the plight of orang-utans in Borneo and the work of the charity at the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre.
For their efforts, the group will receive regular updates on Chikita and the work that the organisation is doing to preserve the endangered species.
Eco committee members, together with Year 6 pupils, were busy collecting Christmas cards since the start of term, which will be recycled through conservation charity the Woodland Trust.
Around 1,440 cards have been donated so far thanks to the hard work of the group’s members and teacher Julie Woodthorpe, who said: “We had a fantastic response to this from pupils, staff and parents, and on behalf of our Eco Committee I would like to thank anyone who brought Christmas cards in for recycling.”
This is the latest in a long line of initiatives by the group, who encouraged pupils to bring in just one card over the festive period for the whole class to save on paper.
They also provided the RSPCA’s Bryn-y-Maen centre in Colwyn Bay with a donation of blankets and tasty treats for rescued animals last year.
The Woodland Trust now has more than 500,000 members in more than 1,000 sites all over the UK, and their work includes supporting wildlife, challenging climate change, planting more trees and protecting vulnerable woods.
