Group 3 - Individuals and societies. Offered at HL and SL
Geography is about management, decision-making and building tomorrow’s world. These concern us all! Geography is understanding:
It is also learning:
The IB Geography course allows students to question and think deeply about the world they see around them and provide the awareness and skills needed to manage it responsibly, productively and sustainably.
By undertaking fieldwork students will develop a range of skills for life, becoming inquiring learners able to design a methodology and collect and process data.
We follow the IB programme, with the following options:
Part 1 SL and HL – Geographic Themes:
Freshwater (SL and HL) Extreme Environments (SL and HL) Geophysical Hazards (HL only)
Part 2 SL and HL - Core:
Changing Population Global Climate - vulnerability and resilience Global Resource Consumption and Security
Part 2 HL – Core Extension:
Power Places and Networks Human Development and Diversity Global Risks and Resilience
At both Standard and Higher level students will produce an internal assessment based on local fieldwork.
The programme features a wide variety of activities. Students receive some college-style lecture classes, where they will be required to take notes. They also prepare and give group presentations, both in class and to the whole school, and take part in discussions. A key part of geographical study is practical fieldwork, and here we utilise our magnificent environment to provide students with several unique experiences. Wider reading and research are also important elements of the course.
With its emphasis on current global issues, problem-solving and decision-making skills, the course provides an essential base for a wide range of careers, including finance, business management, law, administration and government, manufacturing, marketing, media, planning, tourism, resource management and many others. Geography is currently enjoying a renaissance as a subject that gives students a broad understanding of the world we live in.
