Group 1 - Studies in language and literature. Offered at HL and SL Literature / Language and Literature Arabic, Chinese, Italian, Japanese, Russian School Supported Self Taught Language A SL
Languages such as Arabic, Chinese, Italian, Japanese, or Russian may be offered if there is a appropriate demand. These would run as a normal Language A subject would, but there would be an extra charge.
Where a language is not formally offered within the Modern Languages Department, it may be possible for students to study A1 Literature in their mother tongue via the School Supported, Self-Taught programme. This is available at Standard Level only. The student will need an external tutor, agreed by the College, capable of monitoring and advising the him/her on the required written and spoken tasks and prepared to mark the his/her work. Students who undertake the SSST option are supported in school by a member of staff who sees them weekly to ensure that the students are meeting the IB requirements. A typical SSST student will need to be well-motivated, capable of independent work, fairly keen on literature in his/her own language and extremely reliable. In the past, SSST students at Aiglon have studied Portuguese, Mandarin and Korean. Students considering taking the SSST option should contact the head of modern languages and/or the Studies’ Office for advice.
