Ski sensation on the rise
Xavier Poynton has been accepted on to the Ambition Racing Summer Camp, which is being held at the Chill Factore in Manchester.
Ambition Racing is an International Ski Racing program based in Leogang, Austria and is also the UK's leading ski race training provider, specialising in program design and development for elite and developing athletes.
The first session took place during the half term break, where they worked on technique as well as tactical input, including starts, line and inspections.
Mother Clare Poynton, said: “Xavier had an incredible week, getting the opportunity to train with some of the best young skiers in the country. He was also coached by ex-British Champion, TJ Baldwin, who called Xavier a ‘Legend’ much to his delight! He even got to meet and share the slope with Eddie the Eagle!”
The six-year-old put his new skills to good use at the National Schools’ Open Championship in Manchester, where he was competing in the U10 category despite his tender age and produced a stunning effort to secure fourth spot in a very competitive heat.
Race director Marc Telling, who is a former youth champion and a British Development Team athlete, added: “Xavier recently attended one of the Ambition Racing summer camps at Manchester where he was the youngest athlete attending by far.
“His hard work, perseverance and passion for the sport were incredible and he kept up with many of the athletes 3-4 years older than him. One to watch for the future.”
