Host of successes for young stars
Our sailing squad travelled to Sedburgh last weekend to compete at the annual Northern Prep Schools’ Regatta, with four teams competed in the Gold Fleet.
After a highly competitive day of action, the Year 6 trio of Zac Roberts, Christian Cheesley and Llion Morris produced a number of sensational efforts to come away with second place in the Gold event.
Another to emerge from the event with an enormous amount of credit was Year 4 pupil Fflur Pierce, who managed to produce two wins a two thirds in the Gold Fleet despite competing against Year 8 opposition for the majority of the competition.
Keira Luke, Freddie MacLaverty, Tirion Jones, Will Rutherford and Zac Hay were others to perform well, and a pair of Senior School teams also achieved podium finishes in what was another hugely successful weekend for the programme.
Lucy Ranales-Griffiths produced a number of impressive performances to come away with second place from a Conwy U10 tennis competition.
The talented eight-year-old, who was playing against vastly more experienced opposition, demonstrated her immense promise throughout to make it through to the final at the expense of her older adversaries.
Unfortunately Lucy narrowly missed out on the overall crown after a spirited display in the final, and she was acknowledged for her fine effort at Rydal Penrhos’ weekly Celebration Assembly on Friday, June 15.
This is the latest in a long line of successes for the pupil, who has hit the headlines in a variety of areas throughout the academic year in-and-out of the classroom.
Roger McDuff, said: “Congratulations go to Lucy on her fantastic effort, which is made even better by the fact she was competing against ten-year-olds for the majority of the competition.
“She has an enormous amount of poise and composure for someone so young, which is sure to stand her in good stead as she pursues further honours in the future.”
Isabel Stubbings, added to her growing list of successes at the highly competitive Denbigh Junior Triathlon.
The 10-year-old gave a very good account of herself once again, completing four laps of the swimming pool before embarking on a one kilometre bike ride and gruelling run in difficult conditions.
After a rousing and determined performance, the Prep School pupil crossed the line in third spot, earning her a trophy and medal to recognise her efforts.
Isabel also received a generous round of applause at Rydal Penrhos’ weekly Celebration Assembly, which was held on Friday, June 30.
This is the latest in a series of triumphs for the pupil, who gained respectable finish after taking part in a quarter mile open water swimming race on Lake Windermere, which was set up as part of the Great North Swim.
Mrs Hind, said: “Isabel once again showed just how much potential she has in what was another eye-catching display, and everyone is thrilled with her progression and overall performance.
“Triathlon is a sport very much on the up and with plenty of scope for improvement as she gains more experience, I am confident this will be just the start of Isabel’s success.”
John Dick was rewarded for his strong performance after successfully coming through his latest assessment, which was held at John Lynn’s Black Belt Academy in Colwyn Bay.
The talented 11-year-old produced a memorable effort to successfully gain his Brown Belt 1st KYU, and he received the accolade from Master Lynn, who trains John and a host of other Rydal Penrhos pupils at the Academy.
This impressive achievement puts the young hopeful within a few short steps of achieving his Black Belt, and he will now begin working hard in the home of further grading success in the future.
Mr McDuff, said: “John has worked very hard to fly through the various grading levels, and if he continues to progress at his current rate then there will no doubt be even more to celebrate in the coming months.
“To be just a few short levels from a Black Belt at his age is just extraordinary and everyone is immensely proud of John and all that he has accomplished as part of the Academy.”
Eleanor Turner impressed coaches when taking part in the All Stars programme at Colwyn Bay recently, which earned her a bowling star after an eye-catching display.
The six-year-old proved that gender is no barrier by producing a fine spell of bowling throughout the session, taking a number of wickets to earn her the accolade.
The All Stars Cricket scheme has been organised by the England and Wales Cricket Board aimed at providing children aged five to eight with a great first experience in the sport.
It runs for a period of eight weeks and is a game based programme that is suitable for all skill levels.
The initiative has been designed to ensure that more youngsters get a solid cricketing foundation, in addition to encouraging physical activity in a “safe and enjoyable” environment.
An ECB spokesman, said: “All Stars Cricket is unlike any other kids' sporting activity in England and Wales.
“The programme is built on solid foundations of social and physical development for children. Our centres and activators are trained to provide every child with a great first experience in cricket.
“The eight weeks will be action packed, with fun games and the chance to learn new skills.”
No fewer than three pupils joined a host of other young hopefuls for the high-profile competition, which was held at Grays Gymnastics Club.
Year 1 pupil Tomás Milligan continued his excellent run of recent results by securing a fourth placed finish, while classmate Xavier Poynton also earned himself a ribbon after coming in a very creditable fifth spot.#
There was further success in the form of Oscar Jewsbury, who also performed exceptionally well throughout, and all three were given recognition for their efforts at Rydal Penrhos’ weekly Celebration Assembly on Friday, June 30.
The gifted trio will continue working hard at the club during the summer as they gear up for a series of upcoming competitions.
