Elysia Gilman scoops national award
Elysia Gilman emerged victorious from the Under 18 category at the annual Museum of Modern Art for Wales competition, and her work will now be on display at a high-profile exhibition held in Machyntheth during the summer.
Her painting was one of three she produced this term based on members of her family, and the portrait of her sister Lydia is acrylic on canvas and is one metre square.
The 17-year-old collected her cash prize and saw her painting on display at the opening of the exhibition, which is open to the public until the end of August and became part of the Machyntheth Arts festival from August 20-27.
This highly regarded and growing event includes classical music concerts at the Tabernacle Arts centre which is part of the gallery.
Mr Sherrington, said: “The judges were clearly as impressed as me by the freedom, confidence, accuracy and maturity of this piece.
“The earlier paintings in this series were excellent but you can see how much she has learnt and improved in this final painting.
“Elysia has a touch and understanding of the medium that is remarkable for a student of only 17 and I am excited to see what she will produce in her final academic year in the Art department."
