Elysia claims public prize
Elysia Gilman received the Public Vote distinction for her portrait of sister Lydia, which was on display at the Machyntheth Arts Festival.
In order for her stunning piece to appear at the event, Elysia was crowned winner in the Under 18 category at the annual Museum of Modern Art for Wales national competition, and her painting was one of three she produced based on members of her family during the previous academic year.
The Art scholar recently collected her cash prize and saw her painting on display at the opening of the exhibition, which was part of a growing event that included classical music concerts at the Tabernacle Arts centre.
Mr Sherrington, said: “The public were clearly as impressed as me by the freedom, confidence, accuracy and maturity of this piece.
“The earlier paintings in this series were excellent but you can see how much she has learnt and improved in this final painting.
“Elysia has a touch and understanding of the medium that is remarkable for a pupil of only 17 and I am excited to see what she will produce in her final academic year in the Art department.”
