New initiative for young pupils
An exciting new reading initiative was launched for young pupils, and the Junior Book Club congregated at the Learning Resource Centre on Monday, September 18.
This scheme has been implemented to encourage reading and discussion and was open to Year 7 and 8 pupils with a passion for the written word.
During the session each pupil discussed particular books they had enjoyed recently, before joining together to read the opening chapter of Walkabout by James Vance Marshall.
All Book Club attendees have taken copies of the novel to read individual, and they will meet after the half term break to discuss the author’s style and content, in addition to lending their own thoughts on the story to the group.
Walkabout is a timeless tale about two children who get lost in the Australian Outback and are helped by an Aborigine, and the session was taken by English and Drama teacher Mrs Earle.
She said: “This is something new we are offering our pupils and it has received a very positive response in its early stages.
“Reading outside of the classroom is a key component in a child’s learning and something we actively encourage, and it was clear to see that everyone who attended the Junior Book Club has a great passion for the creative side of writing.”
