Success for budding stars
Cieran Milligan has been put forward for a National Development Coaching programme by his coaches at Mochdre Cricket Club, with a decision on the squad expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
The nine-year-old has enjoyed a huge amount of success as part of the club this season, which saw the U11 side claim the Eryri title after a fantastic win over Bethesda.
Also part of the squad were fellow pupils James Gilman and Biv Gilmartin, while Year 7 talent George Watkins also contributed significantly throughout the campaign.
They were unable to replicate this in the North Wales Police Challenge Shield on Sunday, March 17 as they suffered a narrow loss to Buckley in a highly competitive final.
Mr McLeod, said: “Cieran is a multi-talented individual who excels in a number of sporting areas, and hopefully his dedication and commitment will be rewarded with a place on the national development coaching programme.
“We are enormously proud of Cieran, James and Biv for what they accomplished with Mochdre last season, and their efforts should give them a great deal of encouragement as they look to progress their game over the winter months.”
A group of talented gymnasts have received a letter of praise from a leading community figure following their recent competition success.
Against some stiff competition from clubs across North Wales and the North West - including Wrexham and Deeside gymnastics clubs - Will Glanville, Tomas Milligan, Xavier Poynton and Oscar Jewsbury took home an incredible nine medals between them across a number of disciplines at the Buckley Invitational Gymnastics competition.
The quartet’s achievements caught the attention of Aberconwy Assembly Member Janet Finch-Saunders, who took time out of her busy schedule to write a special letter of congratulations to the pupils.
The letter said: “I'm writing to offer my sincere congratulations on your recent achievements. To take home nine medals between you when up against such stiff competition shows how much dedication and hard work you have put in.
“With such a high calibre of ability, across a number of disciplines, it is clear you all have immense promise for both your club and school. You must all be exceptionally proud of your achievements."
All four competitors are part of the Grays Gymnastics Club based in Llandudno and have all shown immense promise in the early stages of their development.
Will Glanville played a significant part in the success of Conwy Borough’s U9 side that competed at a tournament held at Brymbo, which featured more than 20 teams from across North Wales and the North West.
Despite receiving a tough draw, the Tangerines managed to produce a series of fine efforts to emerge as group winners, and they also accumulated enough points to give them a clear route to the final.
The eight-year-old was a key component in Boro’s success, aiding with a number of goals throughout the group stage from the right-wing position.
Unfortunately the young side were unable to take home the overall crown despite a spirited display during the tense final, which saw them on the wrong end of a narrow 2-1 defeat which ensured they finished in second spot after another highly encouraging tournament for the group.
Conwy Borough U9 coach Matt Gilmore, said: “Losing a final is hard but when we dominated 80 per cent of the game it's even harder.
“I am however so happy with what we have achieved in this our first season; quarter final placed in the Liverpool tournament and runners-up in four more prestigious tournaments plus an amazing win in the Towyn Cup earlier in the summer."
James Gilman has been selected to skipper the Football side, having make a huge contribution to the U11 team last year despite having been one of the youngest within the squad.
The title of Hockey captain has been bestowed on the talented Jasmin Beckett Donald thanks to her exceptional commitment and leadership throughout her time at the school.
Newly appointed ski captain Telor Jones has made a hugely impressive start in his new role by leading the squad to the overall North Wales Championship crown, ensuring they have now qualified for the national finals in Llangranog.
There was also some individual success for the 10-year-old, as he triumphed in the U12 Boys’ category after a standout display.
Mrs Hind, said: “Congratulations to James, Jasmin and Telor on being appointed to their roles, and we are confident that they are going to bring a great deal to their respective positions.
“They have all shown the right qualities to be successful during their time with us, and hopefully this extra responsibility will give them an added boost of confidence ahead of what is sure to be a busy term.”
Our fantastic skiing squad added to their impressive list of accolades with a regional title.
The talented group descended on Plas y Brenin for the North Wales Ski Championships on Wednesday, September 13, and their exceptional performance stole the show to claim a haul of medals.
After a highly competitive evening of action, the team of Telor Jones, Will Rutherford, Xavier Poynton and Agatha Favill came away with the overall title, with Rydal Penrhos’ second team consisting of Cieran Milligan, Biv Gilmartin, Freddie MacLaverty and Fflur Pierce finishing close behind in second place.
There was further cause for celebration as the third team of Henry Hibbert, Jasmine Beckett-Donald, Ella Northcott and Ethan Akroyd making it a clean sweep for the school with a Bronze finish.
In addition to the team triumphs, there were also a number of individual accolades within the squad, with child prodigy Xavier continuing his outstanding season with Gold in the U8 Boys category.
Promising skier Agatha put in another sterling performance to come away with the U10 girls’ competition, with a standout showing from Biv earning him the U10 boys’ crown. Recently appointed school ski captain Telor Jones began his leadership role with the U12 boys’ title.
Our U11 football side, which consisted of pupils from Year 5 and 6, travelled to Ellesmere College to compete at a U11 competition featuring a number of other schools from across the North West.
The team got off to an impressive start by securing a 3-0 win over Moreton Hall, which featured a hat-trick from the talented Biv Gilmartin, who is also a member of the Llandudno FC Academy programme, together with some superb goalkeeping from Liam Farrell.
This trend continued throughout the group stages, thanks in no small part to the standout efforts put in by Gilmartin, skipper James Gilman and Henry Hibbert.
Another to catch the eye was Zack Coverley as they managed to book their place in the final four.
A tense affair in their semi-final against Shrewsbury School finished goalless after the allotted time, with the squad suffering an agonising golden goal defeat in their efforts to reach the final.
They eventually secured fourth spot from the tournament after being on the wrong end of a penalty shootout defeat in the third/fourth place playoff.
Mr McLeod, said: “This was a very encouraging effort from the group and it should give them plenty of optimism for upcoming fixtures after the half term break."
