Foreword from the Headmaster
Michael Morpurgo, on the importance of reading, commented "In a world which is increasingly complex it seems to me that reading is such a wonderful thing.
Open a book and find a whole world out there that you know nothing about." In such a busy first half of term full of sport, creativity, leadership and academic success it's wonderful to see that such a simple activity - reading- can retain its importance and centrality in our curriculum and working week.
Research shows that reading can improve everything from literacy to empathy and even mathematical ability but perhaps most of all it provides that wonderful mix of being an individual activity with all its escapism and yet is also a social activity when the words or ideas are shared with others.
We all have our favourite Roald Dahl book and characters and many were on show earlier in the term; for all of Dahl's imagination it is probably the simplicity of Danny Champion of the World which I enjoyed most. Fancy dress days are all well and good but it's the act of actually reading and engaging with the text which is the most transformative of experiences.
Hopefully you will enjoy reading this newsletter but more importantly I trust you will encourage your children to read often, especially over holidays such as this half-term, and explore the themes and ideas of a world perhaps very different from our own here in Colwyn Bay.
