Alex returns to give Society lecture
Alex Bytheway, who left the school in 2016, is currently studying Chemistry at the University of York and spoke on the topic of ‘Alchemy to Chemistry’ at the Carnegie Room for the latest Scientific Society lecture on Tuesday, December 5.
The ex-pupil will be discussing how alchemists tried to create gold and discover other elements along the way, in addition to speaking on modern day chemistry and how it can be used to save lives.
He also used visual demonstrations in the form of three eye-catching experiments, which wowed the large number of pupils and staff in attendance.
Alex was one of ten Chemistry students at the university that gained a special scholarship for the second year in succession, which is based on academic performance and non-course related chemistry experiences.
The former prefect was praised for his work after winning a place on the prestigious Nuffield Research Project at Bangor University, where he and ex-Head Boy Shaswath Ganapathi beat out more than 400 applicants for the role.
