UKMT Senior Challenge success
Seven pupils from the school either qualified for the UK Maths Trust’s British Olympiad or Kangaroo tests as a result of their super performance during the organisations Senior Challenge, and all candidates took their respective papers on Friday, December 1.
The Upper Sixth Form duo of Emily Li and Linda Wang, who were part of Rydal Penrhos’ winning Senior Team Challenge foursome, qualified for the British Mathematical Olympiad after achieving a score of more than 104 from the original paper.
Around 1,000 invitations to the BMO’s first round, and the gruelling paper lasts three and a half hours and contains six complex and involved mathematical problems for which full written solutions are required.
There was further success as five pupils sat the Senior Kangaroo after obtaining scores of more than 86 from their initial challenge.
Year 13 pupils Eric Zhao and Vivia Li were two of the group, with Alex Sorokin (Y12) and Rune Jeremie (Y11) also making it through to the Kangaroo stage.
Juan Rajagopal also managed to secure enough points to sit the kangaroo paper, despite being a Year 9 pupil sitting an exam designed for Sixth Formers.
Mrs Williams, said: “Our Mathematics department has been a source of some incredible achievements in recent weeks, and hopefully this trend will continue in both the British Olympiad and Kangaroo stages of the UKMT competition.”
