From the Executive Principal
Rydal Penrhos is a school of which we are immensely proud; our pupils are absolutely delightful, and they are ably and enthusiastically supported by a talented and committed staff.
This school is a Christian Foundation in the Methodist tradition, and all members of our inclusive community are valued for the unique contribution that each individual brings.
We seek to provide a safe and happy environment within which our pupils can thrive; this features outstanding pastoral care, excellent teaching and a powerful extra-curricular programme which is designed to enable each pupil to live his or her life to the full, both whilst at school and afterwards.
Every member of the Rydal Penrhos staff has a deep commitment to our pupils, and this ethos contributes to high academic attainment and enhanced progress which result in excellent examination results, as well as to their progression to universities which include Oxbridge and institutions within the Russell Group.
Rydal Penrhos has remarkable facilities which enable us to make exceptional all-round provision for our pupils, and these are complemented by our location close by Snowdonia National Park, a focal point for outdoor education. We also enjoy the benefits of Colwyn Bay beach on the North Wales coastline, which provides both a stunning vista and ready opportunities for watersports.
The range of extra-curricular opportunities for pupils is extensive and of high quality: it includes Music, Performing Arts, a thriving Duke of Edinburgh Award programme, a Sailing Centre accredited by the Royal Yachting Association, and one of the finest Golf Academy initiatives in the country. To this is added a rich and proud history of sporting success.
The school can best be judged by meeting our pupils, who are invariably well-mannered, kind, respectful, well-educated, hardworking, excellent company and good fun.
We warmly invite you to see for yourself.
Rydal Penrhos pupils have been learning and living in this beautiful corner of the UK for more than 130 years offering a breadth of education that is truly unique.
Today our ambition is for Rydal Penrhos to be the first choice school in the North West and one of the UK’s most inspiring and admired co-educational schools offering education for girls and boys from 2 ½ to 18.
On the edge of the Snowdonia National Park, looking out to sea and occupying a quiet corner of the coastal town of Colwyn Bay our Nursery, Prep and Senior Schools are perfectly placed to offer an inspirational learning environment. Our aim is to be a vibrant and joyful ‘world class’ school. We firmly believe that a Rydal Penrhos education must be rooted in a school’s values and principles but mindful of the fact that children have different needs, talents (some known some not yet) and interests.
We are guided by our Christian Methodist founding values and provide a transformative experience for every pupil. Academic success, sporting triumphs, artistic and musical excellence and pupil wellbeing are the natural outcomes of this ethos.
Laying the foundations for a successful education
Rydal Penrhos Prep provides a complete Pre-School and day school primary education of the highest standard for children aged 2½ -11.
Situated within its own safe and enclosed area of the school, every child is known and valued as an individual and has the chance to explore their natural curiosity, take on new challenges and flourish academically.
The Pre-School Department is the first stage on the educational journey at Rydal Penrhos and our specialist staff offer our very youngest pupils an introduction to school life in a welcoming, safe and stimulating atmosphere.
They can thrive and develop at their own pace in the classroom and what better way to learn than outdoors?
"We are fortunate to have a lovely woodland area within the school grounds and the coast is just a few hundred metres away."
The Rydal Penrhos Forest and Coastal Schools provide our Pre-School pupils with safe outdoor learning experiences where they can explore, investigate and take suitable risks in an exciting natural environment whatever the weather!
The Pre-School is a bridge from home to school where they will take their first steps to independence before they more to the more structured approach in Reception.
Children enter our main Prep School into Reception after their time in our Early Years department or indeed moving from other nursery provision or home. It is a wonderful age group where really effective learning is about opening minds and encouraging the sharing of ideas, which in itself develops communication skills and the ability to form friendships and work as a team.
From the age of seven onwards, the Prep School offers excellent pastoral care within a warm, friendly environment but with clear educational goals. We provide all pupils with a broad and balanced curriculum, generally following the National Curriculum for Wales but as an independent school have the freedom to offer a wider curriculum.
Music and drama form an important part of school life with a high percentage of children learning individual instruments and all children taking part in regular concerts, weekly celebration assemblies and plays.
From Year 3 onwards, Maths and English are taught as form subjects while we take pride in offering specialist subject teachers in all other subjects The curriculum is linked to that of the senior school, to enable a smooth transition between the schools.
Outside the classroom, sailing and skiing, team sports and a full extra-curricular programme all enhance the academic learning of our pupils. Regular matches against other schools encourage an understanding of team spirit and healthy competition and are enjoyed with much fun and the all-important match teas!
Wrap-around care is available throughout the Prep School to assist with the busy lives of parents.
Our Senior School educates pupils from the age of 11 – 18. Throughout the school our pupils benefit from highly motivated and inspirational staff with classes small enough to provide the level of individual attention that we believe pupils deserve.
Our entry is non-selective but academic achievement is high with expert additional provision available for those identified with learning needs as well as an outstanding Gifted and Talented programme with seminars and workshops to challenge and encourage debate and learning among our most able pupils.
As pupils enter Year 7 and adapt to the different pace of Senior School life, they also enjoy a broad curriculum providing an opportunity to gain experience and learning in a wide spectrum of subjects before making their GCSE choices. As well as introductions to Design and Technology, Drama and Food & Nutrition, Year 7 pupils will also have weekly Rydal Penrhos Learner lessons on mindfulness, community, relationships, leadership, politics and business.
In the two year GCSE course, all pupils will follow the RPS core curriculum which delivers eight GCSEs with the possibility of the RPS extended curriculum delivering up to 11 GCSEs by taking the options of Additional Maths, English Literature, and Triple Award Science. We have an ethos of participation for all and leadership, fair play, courage and team spirit are the lifelong skills that our pupils learn, regardless of ability. However, we are proud of a long and outstanding sporting tradition with an impressive record of achievement both among our pupil and alumni.
Talented players will be invited to join our elite sporting squad programmes and will be supported by specialist coaches and our Strength and Conditioning team allowing them to compete at the highest levels. Opportunities to try new sports, to contribute to projects such as the Greenpower racing car, to play in the school Jazz band, or to take some time to reflect and be still in our Mindfulness sessions all help to contribute to the development of well-balanced individuals with a strong sense of enquiry about the world around them.
During Year 9 enrichment sessions, pupils will commence their Duke of Edinburgh award including volunteering, learning a new skill, a First Aid course, and an overnight expedition in nearby Snowdonia.
At weekends, our programme of cultural and sporting visits, sightseeing and outdoor adventure all provide long lasting experiences, fun and memories and are open to both day and boarding pupils alike.
With our spectacular location and setting we are fortunate to have possibly some of the most beautiful buildings and views of any school in the UK, but it is the community of our school that is at the heart of what makes us Rydal Penrhos.
We are known for our exemplary pastoral care and the consistent attention that we give to the wellbeing of every child whether they are a day or boarding pupil. We know that pupils who are happy and supported will thrive at school.
Pupils are cared for through the school’s tutorial system with individual tutors being the link for support in both academic and pastoral areas. Frequent communication between parent and tutor is also promoted to build the best support for pupils from both home and school. Our school is welcoming and open to parents and we encourage their involvement in the progress of our pupils.
In the Senior School, in addition to the tutors, our Heads of Lower School (Years 7 and 8), Middle School (Years 9, 10 and 11) and Sixth Form also provide additional care. All pupils also benefit from the specialist support of our school Medical Centre, Counsellor and Chaplain.
However, it is the Rydal Penrhos pupils themselves that truly add another dimension to the caring environment at our school. All pupils are encouraged to look after each other and to accept their part in the community life of the school.
Our Sixth Formers formally peer mentor our newest arrivals and our support extends well beyond the moment our leavers depart. Our network of alumni continues to expand with more than 5,000 active members staying in touch with us, making the most of their longstanding school friendships and supporting the school financially and generously with their time.
